About the 2024 Community Engagement Exchange Program

The 2024 Community Engagement Exchange Program is a year-long program designed for young civil society leaders between 21-27 to gain the skills and connections to take their community initiatives to the next level by harnessing the power of networks, relationships, and information for the public good, specifically on issues related to civic dialogue and peacebuilding, open and participatory government, women and gender, environmental sustainability, and youth engagement.

Benefit

You will love to hear this. The program covers the cost of this program and includes the following:

  1. J-1 visa support
  2. Round-trip travel from participants’ home city to the U.S.
  3. Monthly allowance to cover housing, meals, and other living expenses while in the U.S.
  4. Health insurance is covered as well. So, don’t worry about health insurance during your stay in the United States.
  5. You will spend three months in the United States with a monthly stipend.

  1. Must be from any of these countries to be eligible to apply for the 2024 Community Engagement Exchange Program:

Africa: Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

East Asia and the Pacific: Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vanuatu, and Vietnam

Europe and Eurasia: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Türkiye, and Ukraine.

Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, and Palestinian Territories

South and Central Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan

Western Hemisphere: Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela

Kindly note that this opportunity is NOT eligible for the U.S.-based CEE Program:

  • U.S. citizens and/or permanent residents of the United States.
  • Individuals participating in academic, training, or research programs in the United States or other countries at the time of application.
  • Individuals residing or working outside their home countries at the time of application are not eligible unless the individual is a refugee or holds special refugee status and is working on behalf of their home country/community.
  • Individuals who have participated in an exchange visitor program sponsored or funded by the U.S. government (e.g., U.S. Department of State Public Affairs Section of U.S. embassies or other U.S. government agencies) who have not fulfilled their two-year home residency requirement by the time of application.
  • Individuals who have applied for U.S. permanent residency in the past three years.

2. You have to be currently living and working in your home country at the time of application. Also, bear in mind that the 2024 Community Engagement Exchange Program will give special consideration to individuals living in another country who have refugee status and are working on behalf of their home community.

3. You have to confirm that you will be able to begin the CEE Program in the United States in 2025 once you are selected. Remember, this program is fully funded. I talk more about this later in the Benefits section.)

4. You have to be committed to returning to your home country after completion of the program and implementing a community-based project. The organizers don’t have time to pursue their selected participants back to their home country once the program is over.

5. You have to be proficient in both written and oral English at the time of application. Also, bear in mind that all the shortlisted semi-finalists will have to take a Duolingo test for the English language.

6. One of the most important criteria is that you must have a minimum of two years of professional or volunteer experience working on community or civil society issues at the time of application. Also, read the FAQ Here.

7. University students are also eligible to apply.

8. Must be between 21 and 27 years old as of the time of this application. If your age does not fit this, kindly click here to find more opportunities you might be eligible to apply for.

9. Warming! According to the 2024 Community Engagement Exchange Program selection rules, the use of AI tools to draft or refine any part of your responses will result in your application being disqualified. All application responses will be checked for AI generation.

Deadline.

The deadline to apply falls on July 2, 2024, at 11:59 Eastern Time. So if I were you, procrastination would not be found in my DNA.
